We are inspired by Solomon's desire to fight malaria and his creativity in organizing events. Solomon wrote to us in an email:

"I found it very heartbreaking that in Africa, and even in my country, Ethiopia, so many people are dying from malaria because they cannot get a hold of a mosquito net, but here in the United States, getting hold of these mosquito nets is not an issue for most people. I realized that with malaria, there is so much that I can do to help, and after searching for an organization to send money for mosquito nets, I thought that TAMTAM, Together Against Malaria, was perfect." -Solomon Shewit

Solomon shared with us plans to hold various events such as bake sales, concerts, and Ethiopian food services. We have just received Solomon's contribution to TAMTAM which will provide hundreds of mosquito nets in sub-Saharan Africa.

Thank you, Solomon, from the whole TAMTAM team! At the same time, we are also observing the rate at which households will install nets on their own and whether or not the nets make it home after a fixed point distribution. These questions were all suggested by malaria policymakers in Ghana. We hope to deliver useful findings for them through our work these past few months.

The community health workers are now visiting homes to install mosquito nets and collect other information. They have been trained to hang nets in different types of rooms, over beds and mats, and armed with supplies such as flashlights, nails, and hammers.

We look forward to hearing that households not only own but also use their mosquito nets to cover their entire family.
After two action-packed days, nearly 2000 nets have been distributed for free to communities in Dzamam sub-district. Five separate distributions were supported by the community health volunteers, the local health clinic, KLO Drivers’ Alliance, and the TAMTAM team. The tro-tro van which carried our 2,000 nets and team members traveled many kilometers over challenging terrain to reach the communities. The message covered basic malaria prevention information and proper care (mild soap, no sun exposure, minimal washing) and use of the mosquito nets including a hang-up demonstration. Following the message, household heads were called by name from the pre-registration list and given the mosquito nets allocated to their household. TAMTAM’s mosquito nets, WHO-certified Permanets manufactured by Vestergaard-Frandsen, were prepared by opening the package and cutting a hole in the tag to mark TAMTAM nets. Hooks, strings, and an instructional cartoon were included in the distributed packs. Nets were opened to ensure they could not be sold and so that households were know to use the nets immediately instead of saving them for the future. It was quite an assembly line with all hands on deck to assemble thousands of nets for distribution.

At the end of the distributions, we were satisfied to know that six communities, or 3,700 people in 585 households were protected by TAMTAM mosquito nets. It was especially rewarding to see mothers and small children and pregnant women taking home nets. Thank you to KLO Drivers Alliance for their preparation and facilitation of the entire project. The staff members of the Dzamam health clinic (Barbara, Wahab, Eudia, and Abigail) have been very helpful- from shuttling us to distant villages on their Ghana Health Service motor bikes, coordinating collection of data from volunteers, and storing our supplies. They are all nurses and technicians assigned to this rural site, far from their homes and where they must learn the new language of Krobo. Once again, we have been inspired by local partners and found their participation critical to the success of our work.

Photos from Pre-Registration in Dzamam

Father and son visited during a household pre-registration visit.

Volunteer Abraham checking one of the few existing mosquito nets. The community health volunteers for TAMTAM’s project in the Dzamam sub-district gathered at the church across from the health clinic. During the one day training, the volunteers learned how to pre-register their communities so that TAMTAM could distribute enough mosquito nets for universal coverage. As defined by the National Malaria Control Program’s standards, universal coverage for a household is one net for every two people, up to the number of sleeping spaces, and less the household’s current effective nets. Our volunteers went into their communities to return this information for each of their households. They were also prepared with tools such as clipboards, inkpads, pens, and flashlights to help them accurately obtain the data needed. During training, volunteers were able to practice administering the pre-registration survey. They problem solved potentially challenging situations through role playing and discussing together.

After training, the seven volunteers (Richard, Christian, Felix, Nicholas, Abraham, Joseph, and Joseph) conducted pre-registration in their respective communities of Brepaw, Dawatrim, Dzamam, Adwenso, Takorsae, and Afuafie. TAMTAM members were available to work with the volunteers during their first few household visits to ensure that there were no difficulties. In total, 3800 people in about 600 households were registered for TAMTAM’s project.

Ghana Field Site: Dzamam

Dzamam is a sub-district of Upper Manya Krobo District. The district was formed just two years ago, after Manya Krobo became too large to adequately distribute resources. The new district is working to develop its own systems and leadership. Its capital is Asesewa, which is about one hour by car from the Eastern Region capital of Koforidua. Dzamam consists of sub-districts and communities which are largely farmers of cassava, maize, and cocoa yam. There are also fishing villages since the Volta River and its tributaries are in the area. Market day is Friday in Asesewa (mini-market on Monday) so that is the busiest transport day- with tro-tros and cars kicking up heaps of dust on the usually quiet roads. It has been a pleasure to get to know this area- with rich soil, lush green mountains during this rainy season, and welcoming people. The useful phrase, “Mo choom ka” or “Thank you very much” in the local Krobo language, has served us well.

Reporting from Ghana

Greetings from beautiful Ghana! Here is a long-awaited update from Accra and beyond. After arrival in early June, the team has been working on three main tasks: 1) Seeking input and context from key malaria stakeholders a policymakers in Ghana , 2) Developing our study design and submitting for ethics approval from the Ghana Health Service, and 3) Identifying and building a relationship with a local partner to implement the study in a field site.

In Accra, the TAMTAM team benefited from the input and expertise of the Ghana National Malaria Control Program, USAID’s malaria control team, and ProMPT (Promoting Malaria Prevention and Treatment), among others. Their insights into current and future malaria activities and learning from past initiatives have greatly informed TAMTAM’s study.

In the context of a point distribution, TAMTAM’s study will examine the rates of net self-installation and leakage over time, as well as the impact on usage of using community health volunteers to hang nets in homes. To support the plans of Ghana’s National Malaria Control Program, our study will be located in the Eastern Region, which is a high priority region list for large-scale mosquito net distributions to achieve full coverage. We are collaborating with one of ProMPT’s local partners, KLO Drivers Alliance based in Asesewa, close to the capital of Eastern Region, called Koforidua. KLO has been working locally on health initiatives for a decade and has networks of volunteers throughout the many communities it serves. Originally, KLO focused on connecting with taxi and public transport drivers as a means to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS. Here is Mr. Sackitey Offei, director of KLO signing an MOU with TAMTAM.

KLO works hand-in-hand with a local health clinic in the sub-district of Dzamam, which will be the base for TAMTAM’s field activities. Located on a quiet dirt road, the clinic employs 4 staff and acts as a hub for the community health volunteers and health initiatives. We have been pleased to meet the committed and capable staff and found their guidance critical to arranging local plans.

We have submitted our tome of documents (above) to the Ghana Health Service Ethics Review Committee for IRB approval. We have identified 7 community health volunteers for our project – at least one for each of the communities we will cover with mosquito nets: Dzamam, Dawatrim, Brepaw, Afuafie, Adwenso, and Takorase. These volunteers will be our hands and feet in the villages where they will collect assess household sizes and population counts, assist in the distribution of mosquito nets and complete follow-up activities such as hang-up and monitoring.

The TAMTAM team is looking forward to putting mosquito nets over at-risk populations very shortly! Many thanks for all the emails and generous support that have come to us here in the field.

Team Uganda: Wrapping up in Ntenjeru and heading North

The TAMTAM Uganda team has focused the last two weeks on managing the data collection efforts in Ntenjeru and on establishing connections with the political, medical, and non-governmental organizations that fight malaria in Uganda.

We have been working hard to go with VHTs on home visits as often as possible to ensure data quality and consistency. The VHTs have done a great job, and it has been very informative for us to be able to see challenges as they occur and fix them in real time. The VHTs are doing one last large push today and tomorrow to finish up the survey and then the collection will be wrapped up in Ntenjeru.

We also spent three days in Kampala meeting with individuals leading governmental and international malaria research and action organizations. We got up-to-date on the current efforts across all the different organizations in Uganda and established connections with individuals leading national research programs. There is currently a nationwide distribution of nets to pregnant women and children under five. After this category of people is covered, the government will then do a “top up” to distribute one net for every two people in every household. We were excited to learn that our results should be ready in time to inform the procedural development for this “top up” distribution. In August, we will be meeting with some of the organizations coordinating this to share our findings and recommendations.

Finally, we have started to plan the follow-up in Gulu. After meeting with our on-the-ground coordinator there, we have been working out the details of the budget and follow-up activities. We look forward to getting started on the training next week.

Team Uganda: Out in the field

The Uganda team had a very busy and successful week last week. On Tuesday, seven members of the Volunteer Health Team joined us at the Volset White House for a training on conducting the data collection survey. The day began with breakfast, followed by a review of TAMTAM’s goals, this specific study and the importance of malaria research. After Hummy led everyone through the survey and data entry methodology, the VHTs role-played to practice conducting the survey. We were particularly excited about one VHT who enthusiastically and humorously acted out challenging situations the VHTs might run into, including getting romantic advances during the interview and interviewees using the bed nets for alternate purposes. After 8 hours of training the VHTs stayed late to review with each other and practice additional scenarios.

The TAMTAM team and VHT's during training outside of the White House

Sheryl reviewing training materials with VHTs

With training done, we could now get out in the field to see the impact of the TAMTAM nets first hand. We spent the rest of the week shadowing VHTs on home visits which were very insightful. We observed that most people are correctly using their TAMTAM nets but that some individuals struggled to hang theirs or repair them after tearing. While it is very early in the data collection, it may indicate that education or VHT assistance in installing and maintaining the net can have a significant impact on utilization.

Hummy checking up on a TAMTAM net in a local household

We were also excited to learn that, thanks to the efforts of the VHTs and government educational programs, the majority of net recipients correctly identify how an individual contracts malaria. Understanding how malaria is contracted, and therefore why bed nets are important, should also help increase correct utilization of the nets.

We are now back in Ntenjeru where we will spend the week continuing to shadow the VHTs on home visits as well as working with the health clinic’s records to get a better understanding of how the number of diagnosed malaria cases have changed over the course of the year. We are hoping that with additional layers of data we will be able to look at the impact of net distributions on diagnosed malaria cases.
The team on our walk to the office in the morning. TAMTAM has teams in Ghana and Uganda right now, and we will be updating this blog with information and stories about our work on TAMTAM’s 2010 summer projects.

Ghana makes the fifth country in which TAMTAM has conducted research or net distributions. For those who are new to the blog or to the organization, please check out our work at our website, and of course, we’re looking forward to telling you about our work throughout the summer.

We currently have a team of six people based in Accra. We are fortunate to have two members of the team, Esther Hsu and Paul Wang, who are officers of TAMTAM and who worked on the Uganda project last year. We also have four new team members: Julia Goldberg, Teague Hopkins, Matthew Raifman, and me, Leah Stern.

Last week, we had a set of very productive meetings, including one at the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) where we got a chance to listen to the planning discussions for the next major net distribution campaign in the Eastern Region in Ghana. The discussion included representatives from the President’s Malaria Initiative, ProMPT (Promoting Malaria Prevention and Treatment), and Nets for Life.

The TAMTAM team also met separately with ProMPT, an organization funded by USAID which works in partnership with NMCP, and they shared with us their insights from their work, which seeks to strengthen the NMCP’s work and engage stakeholders in malaria interventions.

We have a very nice office in Osu in downtown Accra in the offices of Deliver, a project of John Snow, Inc (JSI). The folks at Deliver have been wonderfully welcoming and have shared their extensive knowledge with us.

This week, we are looking forward to more meetings to discuss what evaluations would be most useful to policymakers. We’re also working to set up visits to potential local partners.

Stay tuned!

Lusanyuse okulaba mu Uganda! This year’s team consists of Sheryl, who is working on her Master of Science in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, Hummy, who is working on her Master in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and Laura who just completed her Master’s of Business Administration.

This summer, the team is focused on collecting follow-up data on the 400+ home bed nets that were distributed to last year. The nets were given out through different techniques and the team will evaluate the follow up data to see if techniques resulted in increased utilization. This information will be reported to the government, US health organizations, and other NGOs to improve the methods through which nets are distributed in the future.

We arrived in Uganda on Saturday and after a bumpy ride down to the Volset Foundation's White House we were treated to a delicious dinner by the wonderful women working at the House. On Sunday, we spent the day learning how to do basic tasks, like washing dishes and bathing, without the luxuries of home life and also had the chance to have some fun with the kids that live nearby.

Monday we got right to work going to the Volset Office to meet with two of the Volunteer Health Team members (VHTs) to develop the follow-up survey, schedule dates for training all of the VHTs, and work on training materials. We’ll spend the rest of this week working closely with the VHTs as well as people involved in the initial follow up study last September, to develop the follow-up survey and the training which we will be giving to the VHTs next Tuesday.
With the leadership and guidance of Mr. Christopher and Dr. Beatrice from Kairos, much travel and coordination with 14 youth leaders and Village Health Team members, and the facilitation of local government officials, brand new nets have reached over 1,300 households. It has been an exciting time for the team, to see our many data files come to life as thousands of people gathered to receive nets. Our nets went out with malaria information and specific messaging about proper care and installation. With this distribution in Gulu, we also hope to learn about the effect of certain messaging on the use of the net in homes. The final follow-up phase will begin in early September, spearheaded by Ash.

LEFT: Curious neighbors watch a net installation, RIGHT: Village health worker, Alfred, installs a new TAMTAM net

We have learned a lot in Gulu and look forward to working there in the future. We also bid a fond farewell to Meredith and Lekha- you will be missed in Uganda!

Day 1 of distribution: Labwoch Parish

Today we started our distributions in Labwoch Parish. We were both eager to get the nets out, and a bit apprehensive about the problems that might arise. Would people come from the villages to the meeting? Would many expect nets who were not assigned to nets? Was there something we hadn’t anticipated?

The first sign of trouble was our incredibly late start – a sign of trouble, fortunately, only for those uninitiated with African time. As we readied ourselves, people kept arriving and when they did, waited patiently. Speeches were made on malaria and bed net care, on self-reliance, and then nets (and a large net transport bag too) were distributed.

Following distribution, some stayed to argue their cases for receiving a net and a protocol was decided. Extra nets went to pregnant women, families with young children, the sick, and the elderly. Once established, few could argue the logic and those that did not receive a net left with without complaint. This population has been growing quickly for the past 2 years as internally displaced peoples have left the refugee camps to return home (post-LRA).

The plan is to first conduct training with Koro County's community health representatives, the "Village Health Team" VHT so our partners know the bednet distribution, data collection and bednet installation procedures. The area is transitioning from years of unrest and violence after the Lord's Resistance Army terrorized the Northern regions of Uganda. Currently, the district is experiencing serious drought as well, adding to the challenges of daily life for the people of Gulu.

TAMTAM arrived here this week and are gearing up to train the volunteers who will assist TAMTAM and our partner, Kairos Community Health Organization, in distributing nets and administering follow-up in the villages. As of now, 1,350 nets have arrived in Gulu and will be distributed shortly!

In recent news, Gulu has been struck by a malaria outbreak- article below from a Ugandan national newspaper.

*******
Uganda: Gulu Declares State of Emergency Over Malaria Outbreak
James Eriku, 19 July 2009

Gulu — Gulu District health department has declared a state of emergency over what authorities have described as a severe outbreak of malaria in the district.

The worst hit area is Gulu Municipality while the counties of Omoro and Aswa have registering relatively low number of out patients' attendances, according to statistics released by the health department.

The department released the report in a special council meeting organised by Unicef in conjunction with the district health department and municipal councillors on the sudden disease outbreak at the district council hall on Tuesday.

The acting head of delegation of the Child Focused Organisation in Gulu sub-office, Dr Vincent Yomani, said the data they have indicates that out patients' department attendance of malaria rose from 25/100 to 40/100 in the district - accounting for about 43/100 school absenteeism rate among children.

"There is an urgent need to strengthen preventive measures as well as encouraging the local people to visit health facilities early enough to keep avoidable deaths at bay," Dr Yomani said.
He attributed the sudden rise of malaria cases to the unpleasant climatic conditions that favours breeding of mosquitoes in many parts of the district.

Meanwhile, Dr Paul Onek, the District Health Officer, said the district has already alerted the Health Ministry about the outbreak because the district does not have the capacity to fight the upsurge as they relied mainly on donor agencies.

"We do not have adequate support from the central government to fight this epidemic and this leaves us at the mercy of our partners in health," Dr Onek said. He revealed that the district receives about Shs300 million per annum for drugs and other management expenses, an amount that he said is far below the need of the health sector in the district.

Copyright © 2009 The Monitor. We also earned a ton in the debrief! A few tidbits:

• Villages would self-monitor effectively to ensure fair and honest distribution of the nets
• Opened net bags were less likely to go to market
• And how to turn down a thirty minute stay and two cups of tea politely!

Welcome to Jasmine and Eric!

Our newest teammates, Eric and Jasmine, arrived yesterday! This first set of seven VHTs – respected members of their communities trained in basic public health direction – would distribute nets to well over 150 households over the next few weeks. The training consisted of explaining the program to the VHTs, practicing the protocols for net delivery and installation, and fielding a great variety of thoughtful questions. The day ended with a ceremony in which we presented each VHT with sufficient nets to start the distribution, as well as a bag to carry their nets in, string, nails, pens, logbooks, and an ink-pad for recording thumbprints. Further, we gave each VHT a net for their own home; much to the VHTs’ delight, their own homes would be the first recipients. As they left, the VHTs seemed delighted by the tools we had given them and eager to get the nets to their communities.

With that, the VHTs were off and running on Wednesday, heading to the villages of Nsumba and Kabira to deliver the nets to the households that they are getting to know so well.

Thursday, in fact, we were witness to the commitment of the field team and the quality of the training. TAMTAM team members shadowed two VHTs – Edward and John – and observed the distribution itself. To the teams delight, the VHTs flawlessly executed the net delivery at the homes we shadowed. The team was also pleased to hear that the VHTs were delivering the nets faster than anticipated given their eagerness to get the nets out to as many household as soon as possible. We are all excited for the next net pick-up day next week so that even more nets can be delivered!

Being in the field for training, shadowing and distribution has been some of our most satisfying and productive time this summer. This is certainly the most tangible way in which we’ve seen our mission being fulfilled! See below for just a sampling of the many pictures we have taken as distribution starts!

NTENJERU TRAINING DAY, JULY 21st 2009

Sewing Circle! Needless to say, this meant that there would be lots of people – and, to be specific, lots of babies – on the island. Given TAMTAM’s mission of distributing bed nets to particularly vulnerable populations, Damba Island would seemingly fit the bill.

My mission in Damba was to understand how TAMTAM could potentially plug into the existing health infrastructure to distribute bed nets on the island. In particular, I would be assessing the feasibility of working with two organizations: The first, VOLSET, is our current partner in Ntenjeru, one of our two existing sites. VOLSET has a network of VHTs – Village Health Teams – that includes three workers on the island. They visit local houses and could potentially distribute nets in the course of their daily activities. The second organization, Damba Clinic, is a government-run provider that offers basic outpatient services, immunizations, and family planning services.

I headed to Damba Monday morning with the VOLSET team from Ntenjeru via a wet-ish two-hour boat ride across Lake Victoria. We arrived on the island to find that it was certainly rough (though less explicitly “pirate” than I had been warned), but that the hospitality of the residents was overwhelming. Joseph, one of the island’s three VHTs, welcomed us to his home with tea, a full Ugandan meal, and a can of dill pickled-flavored Pringles. We settled into his homestead to plan our next few days (see picture to right). Tuesday would be a day of HIV-testing (for the VOLSET volunteers) and checking out the island clinic (for myself and a small legation). Wednesday would be a day for household visits and pulling together our thoughts.

The days were both productive and insightful. While we could speculate about the challenges of island distribution from afar, hiking the two hours through the jungle and over mounds of safari ants to the clinic gave me the first-hand experience of how difficult it would be to move kilos of bed nets across the island (see picture of clinic to left). Similarly, meeting the VHTs and seeing how integrated they were into the community gave me a better sense of their ability to deeply impact the people they served.

Currently, we are hopeful that distribution of nets to Damba will work and we continue to try to solve the logistical issues that beset our work on the island. Now we are focused on getting a distributor to deliver to the island, finding a location for secure storage of the nets, and creating a distribution system to spread nets as broadly as possible while still encouraging crowding-in of immunizations through the local clinic.

Meredith

Week 4

We had a busy week which was split between Gulu, Ntenjeru, and Kampala! In Gulu, we met with Kairos to understand what data they collect on the residents who live in the surrounding villages. This will give us a clearer picture of how many bed nets should be distributed to the community. It also provides us with baseline data on current bed net penetration in the region.

Our visit to Ntenjeru involved shadowing a Village Health Team (VHT), as they made their regular home visits. From watching the VHTs in action it is clear that these volunteers are hard working individuals and are committed to providing better healthcare services to their village. Visiting the home first hand gave the team an idea of the need for bed nets in the region. It is clear that there are many families that do not have the resources to afford bed nets. The home visits also provided the team with ideas on a bed net distribution strategy and how to best leverage the VHT network as we launch our pilot.

In Kampala, we had meetings with a few NGOs that work on AIDS/HIV outreach, testing, and/or treatment. We met with the following NGOs: EGPAF, PREFA, and MSF France. These meetings gave us a greater understanding of the AIDS/HIV support that is taking place in Uganda. As we think about the potential to “crowd in” public health services, such as HIV testing, we hope to potentially partner with one of these NGOs to complement their existing work in Uganda.

The week ended with the arrival of a new team member, Meredith. Meredith is already hard at work in the field. Her first stop is Damba Island, which is located ~2 hours off the shore of Lake Victoria. Stay tuned to hear about Meredith’s adventures to the islands!

Week 3 Update

We spent most of Week 3 in the field visiting potential partner sites. During the beginning of the week we went back to Buluba Hospital to observe one of their immunization days (photo above) and understand the data that they record for their patients when they come in for antenatal visits or immunizations. We also had the opportunity to visit Kairos, an organization that runs a health clinic 10km outside of Gulu (~5 hours north of Kampala). Dr. Beatrice from Kairos showed us around and gave us some context on the patients she sees through the clinic. It is clear that there is a real need for bed nets in the region, and that there is a passionate team on the ground trying to deliver better healthcare to the surrounding area. Kairos has begun collecting data including malaria and bed net information through community gatherings- a potentially useful forum for TAMTAM's partnership.

Meanwhile, meetings in Kampala continue:

Ministry of Health - Malaria Control Program

Mildmay- a UK-based NGO focused on family HIV/AIDS treatment

BASF/ Cooper Pharma- a commercial distributor of bed nets in Uganda

On some exciting news outside of work, team TamTam came in first place at the bi-monthly trivia night at the expat bar Bubble’s! What is the prize for winning such a tough competition? Well, on top of flaunting such an honor to the rest of the small expat community, we get to write the next quiz! The team is busy trying to come up with some tough questions. In the coming week we are looking forward to our visits to Ntenjeru and Gulu. By end of this week we will have an additional teammate- Meredith! We are looking forward to welcoming her to the team and getting her up to speed on the work that we are doing on the ground.

Week 2 Happenings

Another good week here in Uganda, this time a nice mix of field time and in-city meetings. Lekha and Sarah have survived their first week and are full-fledged TAMTAMers.

This week, we met with the following organizations in Kampala:

Ministry of Local Government

UNICEF

Ministry of Health

FXB

Clinton Foundation - CHAI (Country Director and Malaria Program)

Netmark

This week our field visits included VOLSET Foundation in Ntenjeru/Domba Island and Buluba Hospital near Musita. Next week we will return to these sights to learn more and spend dedicated time. We will also head north to Gulu to visit the organization Kairos. Busy first week for Sarah and Lekha- we wish the rest of the team were here too!

We also found ourselves a team mascot, Chris TAMTAM Tam. It's his birthday! We visited Buluba Hospital (located about 2.5 hours east of Kampala) and the Volset Foundation's Village Health Team program in Ntenjuru, north of Mukono. At both of these locations, we found passionate health workers in areas troubled by malaria and without adequate bed net availability. We are in the process of learning more about the data collection, health services, and needs of each of these places. Team TAMTAM seeks to distribute bed nets through our partners in underserved areas and with a focus on "crowding in" other health services. For example, free distribution of much-wanted bed nets could draw mothers into a health clinic to receive an immunization for her child, or partake in pre-natal services. We look forward to getting our nets out in the field and into healthier homes as soon as possible.

In unrelated news, team TAMTAM discovered a bowling alley in Kampala and have decided not to quit our day job.

Welcome to Lekha and Sarah!

Sarah Dillard and Lekha Doshi have arrived safely and soundly in Kampala! Before landing in Kampala, we had been introduced to some contacts in the Ugandan malaria sphere but many variable were still unknown. Now, after our first week, we have been fortunate to meet many knowledgeable and helpful people at various hospitals, government offices, and NGOs. Some highlighted meetings:

Africare

Rotary Club

Malaria Consortium

Kairos

Centers for Disease Control/President's Malaria Initiative

Ford Family Program

Various hospitals and officials in rural Ugandan districts

Right now, we write to you from Busia, Kenya, the birthplace of TAMTAM (where the research that began bed net distribution was conducted by development economists). Kampala is as welcoming as advertised... friendly folks, appealing vistas, fine weather. Hasn't taken much time at all to get up to speed here.

This said, we are a bit champing at the bit to visit some sites in the field. Urban Uganda is one particular experience, but the rural areas completely different. The rural areas is where malaria hits the hardest, and life generally more rough.
